Fantastic Place

Ok, maybe I'm overdoing it with this heaven promising song title (to carry on Aaron's trend). But well, I'm all hyped up about KDE 4. "How come? you know it!" I see you asking. Well until now I only ran KDE 4 applications I am working on within KDE 3 desktop. But 2 days ago I decided to start KDE 4 on its own and wooow, what a progress it made in the last month! It is actually usable now and I got addicted. I enabled kwin_composite for more coolness and hearing "wow" and "wha" my son aged 16 came looking and the verdict is "oh, neat, it's really more "visual"" (in teenager terms, that's the best you can get, I could see he wanted to add KDE 3 was too classical). The FreeDesktop standards allow a better K Menu with all non KDE apps neatly integrated (I discovered some apps I did not know I had ;-) Plasma is more than taking shape and even if there's only the clock to "see" that's not what matters. Visual plasmoids can be easily created when the base libs are well implemented.

For more about kwin_composite you can look at this doc:
http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/KDE/kdebase/workspace/kwin/COMPOSITE_HOWTO?revision=667643&view=markup

I'll be doing a KDE 4 talk at my local LUG next Wednesday so that's why I wanted to "see" it. I'll use oKular for the presentation and I'll be able to demo programs easily.

Together with my son we are Toulouse soccer fans and as my husband is away we could not go to the Stadium for the last soccer match of the season where our team fate was to be sealed. We watched it on the computer and our team won 3 - 1 and will be playing European League 1! So a big cheer for the TFC!

at first i have to say that i adore the great work you do with kde4. i'm also following the kde4 progress actively (kde4 builds from the suse build service). I was really stunned when I first say the cool plasma interface (yes i really like it also in the veeery early state it is at the moment). But: how did you enable the kwin_composite effects... i wasn't able to find them (neither in a menu nor in the kcmshell).. do i need to edit a file for enabling, atm?

so... keep up the great work

yes you need to add some lines to kwinrc
I added
[Translucency]
UseTranslucency=true

[Effects]
Load=ShowFps,Fade,PresentWindows

The kwin_composite HowTo can be seen here:

Thanks for your interest and positive comment!
